Building a company dashboard - All data in one tool - Airtable as a dashboardĪirtable calls itself a powerful online platform for creating and sharing the business management tool. The views are supported by numerous filter, sorting and grouping functions, so that the right view for each piece of information can be viewed and also saved. In this way, the platform can be used for a wide variety of applications. In addition to the grid view, there is a calendar, gallery, Kanban, Gantt or even form view for each table. Airtable does not want to be a pure spreadsheet and shows this impressively through the different views. But what is Airtable exactly? How does it work? And why do we use the tool in almost every one of our automation projects?īut appearances are deceptive. The tool promises to combine the power of a database with the familiarity of a spreadsheet and we can't escape that statement. That's exactly why we celebrate Airtable so much. But we think databases and tables should be accessible, intuitive and easy to use for everyone. Because entering new data in the right place without affecting formatting or functions can become a minefield.īut is that really purposeful? Complex tables and databases that can hardly be operated anymore? Ultimately, it is up to you to answer this question. The problem: this should then only be touched by professionals. With countless linked and functionally assigned fields, huge relative databases can be built that can map almost any information. Spreadsheet tools like Airtable can be real power machines. Or you have just such a person in your team who always relies on Excel and wants to implement everything there, but doesn't find the spreadsheet programme intuitive at all and has to Google how to do it again for every second function. Indeed, Airtable should fear investing in a lot of dashboard features because it will never be able to address the long-view of these requirements. You have made all the possibilities of Excel your own over the years and have worked up numerous Excel files for yourself in such a way that you can't understand how others can't love Excel too. There’s an entire market segment of dashboard solutions so we can’t really expect Airtable to stand tall in both technology segments they have to pick a lane and lean on integrations to provide data aggregations, analytics, and visual dashboards.īesides, as soon as you build a dashboard with Airtable data, the very next challenge from leadership will be - can you integrate my web analytics? How about sales metrics from Xero? And when can we monitor machinery statistics from manufacturing?ĭashboards - for the most part - are intended to provide aggregations across many information sources, hardly the wheelhouse for Airtable. The fact that Airtable has attempted to show dashboard-like qualities with blocks serves only to provide simplistic data visualizations. ElasticSearch/Kibana are doing that, but each is a separate technology stack. I can think of no code-free environments that serve as both an aggregator of data for analytics and a database management solution. Well, despite the common desire to blend disparate information into a dashboard, it’s uncommon for database systems to also provide the underpinnings of a dashboard solution. I would imagine that this is a common enough use case that there should be a way to do this non-programmatically.
